When indirect economic activity is included—such as suppliers, contractors, and supporting industries—the tech sector helps generate close to one trillion dollars in economic activity.


Employment numbers illustrate the sector’s reach. California’s technology industry directly employs more than 1.5 million workers, and millions more jobs are supported indirectly through supply chains, infrastructure projects, and consumer spending. Tech workers in the state earn some of the highest salaries in the country, with average wages often exceeding $150,000 per year, significantly higher than the state’s private-sector average.

These innovations have brought significant benefits.

Streaming platforms use advanced algorithms to personalize recommendations for viewers, while filmmakers increasingly rely on digital tools and AI-assisted editing to produce content more efficiently.

Despite the enormous wealth generated by the technology sector, the benefits of the industry are not evenly distributed.


Cities like San Jose, San Francisco, and Palo Alto have some of the highest housing costs in the United States. In parts of Silicon Valley, median home prices exceed $1 million, placing homeownership far out of reach for many residents.


The rapid growth of tech companies has also reshaped local economies. As high-paying technology jobs attract skilled workers from across the world, demand for housing, infrastructure, and services has surged. While this growth has benefited property owners and investors, it has also intensified economic inequality in some communities.


In some cases, longtime residents have been priced out of neighborhoods that were once affordable. Local governments have struggled to build housing quickly enough to keep up with the influx of new workers and companies.


The result is a paradox: California’s tech industry has generated immense prosperity, yet many residents feel disconnected from the wealth being created around them.



Political Influence and Policy Power

With economic power often comes political influence, and the technology sector is no exception.

Major tech companies spend millions of dollars each year on lobbying efforts aimed at shaping public policy. These efforts focus on issues such as artificial intelligence regulation, data privacy laws, antitrust enforcement, and taxation.

For better or worse, the power of California’s tech industry means that innovations developed in Silicon Valley rarely stay in Silicon Valley for long.
